The President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands and the Conference of Regional Legislative Assemblies of Europe (CALRE), Gustavo Matos, participated this Tuesday in the presentation of the Report on Legislation 2019-2020 organized by the Conference of Presidents of Legislative Assemblies of the Regions and of the Autonomous Provinces of Italy with the Chamber of Deputies of Italy.
With his intervention, he made known the response articulated from the Canarian Chamber to continue his activity during the state of alarm decreed by the Government of Spain on the occasion of the COVID-19 pandemic. He explained the particular circumstances of the Canary Islands as it is an archipelagic territory with seven island and one regional constituencies, where physical assistance to the Parliament’s headquarters was impossible due to the mobility restrictions imposed by the pandemic and the measures of social distancing to guarantee security.
“The adaptation of the Regulation in record time was a challenge in our aspiration not to close the doors of the Chamber for a single day,” said Matos. He indicated that the first measure adopted consisted in the authorization of the Permanent Deputation to continue the activity during those first weeks of confinement, while for the participation and vote of all the deputies, this express modification of the Regulations was carried out, with which It combines physical presence with participation and voting from other spaces through telematic means.
Gustavo Matos stressed that all the efforts made in the Parliament of the Canary Islands in recent months “have allowed our House to be at the forefront in Spain and Europe” in terms of participation and voting. “It has been an important technical and legal effort. We have done it successfully, “he stressed.
