The exhibition “Da imagem nasce uma história” (“From the image a history is born”) by students from the 6th grade of António José de Ávila Elementary School, from Horta, was displayed at the Azorean Parliament premises. The exhibition was made up of work performed in Visual and Technological Education and Portuguese classes during the school year of 2017/2018.
After getting in touch with the work by the painter Carlos Carreiro, through a visit to the Legislative Assembly and online researches, the students were invited to perform a reinterpretation of the painter’s work using some pictorial elements of his works. Subsequently, they added a narrative to the work, reversing the normal pattern for the illustration of a text. Carlos Carreiro, born on São Miguel island, is one of the most emblematic Azorean artists. His surrealist, very own and narrative style is full of visual metaphors, often absurd.
The polyptych shown at the Plenary Room of the Azorean Parliament is one of the three works that are part of the Parliament’s Art Collection, being one of its most emblematic works. In this work, Carlos Carreiro represents the social, economic, cultural and religious Azorean way of life, thus representing the Azorean sociocultural identity.
The exhibition, which could be seen in the Atrium of the Azorean Parliament, was visited every day, until last 11 July
