Brexit, Cattaneo (CALRE): “A victory of particularism. Europe shall start a path to reform”

Milan, June 24 – The referendum results which involved Britain can only make us look with concern to the future of Europe. Yet, we need Europe”, this is the comment of the President of the Conference of European Legislative Assemblies (CALRE) and of the Regional Council of Lombardy, Raffaele Cattaneo. “The alternative of the rebirth of nationalism and particularism – continued Cattaneo – takes us back a hundred years, to the beginning of the two world wars in which European nations have killed each other. We want a different Europe from today, but the alternative to a united Europe can be tragic. For this reason it is serious that in Great Britain prevailed particularism and closure rejecting the chance of a true revival of European policies. Britain has chosen isolation. The epochal challenges of immigration, the fight against terrorism, the European economic recovery, as well as climate change and environmental sustainability, can’t be faced with a Europe deeply divided within itself and unable to take charge of the common destiny of the people belonging to it. The time has come to launch in Europe an internal reform path. Europe is our home: it is the home of nations, peoples and territories knowing to be part of history and of a common destiny.
